the physical can be difficult unless you watch their every move.
behavioral is easier:
lieing, outbursts, stealing, rage, personality changes when drinking and not. a big one is- do you feel like they play head games with you? if you do, then they are. finding bottles around their home. they dont throw them away because they think "if people find them, they’ll know i drink."

With some diseases, people can break out in rashes.
With alcoholism, it is common for the sufferer to break out in handcuffs.

Denial that there’s a problem
Getting angry if someone brings up drinking as a problem
Car accidents; falls; drinking BEFORE going to a party or dinner to get in extra drinks; going out to drink with friends; drinking alone; drinking every night after work; binges every few months or on weekends; having to go out to get beer, etc.
Blackouts, losing time; asking for you to cover by calling in sick for them; absenteeism.
Tremors; throwing up; headaches; hangovers; indigestion; gastritis; change in behavior when drinking…either getting more quiet or getting loud, disinhibited, aggressive, violent.
Trying to reduce drinking by switching liquors, IE: from hard liquor to beer.
12oz beer=4 oz wine=1oz hard liquor
Trying to stop but falling short of goal.
Women are more likely to be secret drinkers, sleep more, hiding bottles, etc.
These are beginning signs of alcoholism
