I have had trouble with drinking and I have stopped but Ive heard of controlled drinking any thoughts?
If you have a problem then the safest option is to avoid alcohol completely;
I drink 3-4 times a week but lately more frequently. I don’t wake up craving alcohol though. It’s always later in the day, usually after work. I drink about a 6-pack and a pint of Rum over several hours. I do often don’t remember what I’ve done and I’ve done some embarassing things. I’ve also become very agressive lately when drinking when I always was a happy drinker. LUCKILY, I always have a sober driver. Lately, I’ve been very edgy and nervous. I get angry at the drop of a pin. I’m scared that I need help. Are there meds. that help if I quit with your nerves? I don’t want to go to a rehab because I don’t have insurance and I don’t want to lose my job. I also have an anxiety problem to begin with and take Xanax for my nerves. I know the combo. of Xanax and alcohol is bad and makes the alcohol much stronger. Oh, I’m a woman in my early 30’s. I’m 5′7 and 125 lbs. so I’m not a big person who has a huge tolerance although it seems like it sometimes.
From what you have said, I think you qualify as an alcoholic. The binge drinking and blackouts are pretty sure signs. You should be able to go to the Alcoholics Anonymous website, www.aa.org for all sorts of information on this subject.
There really is no medication that is very useful to treat alcoholism. The treatment can be complex, but the best treatment available is probably the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, and there are meetings available virtually everywhere. Be aware, though, that AA is a program of complete abstinence, and following their suggestions involves a complete overhaul of your life.
My fiance is going in for an assessment tomorrow for alcoholism at a local treatment center. I’m petrified of what they are going to say but think I am that way because I don’t know what to expect from the appointment. What are they going to do tomorrow? Just ask a bunch of questions? Will they take a urine or blood test? Has anybody been through this or done an assessment and knows whats going to happen?
I’m wondering why you are "petrified" of him determining if he has a health problem or not. An alcoholism assessment involves talking about use history, patterns of use, functioning in other areas of life (school, job, relationships) and how that if affected by use. Sometimes there is a family history taken.
A good treatment center is going to have a medical profile done to determine any physical problems that might have been caused by drinking (malnutrition, liver disease), and if there are other drugs involved in his addiction (determined through urine, blood or hair testing).
A good treatment center will also do a mental status exam to determine if there are any co-occurring disorders like depression since many things are often connected.
They’re not going to hurt him, they just want to figure out what is wrong and see what they can do to help him. Neither of you need to be frightened of that. Embrace this next step as a way for everyone to get well, and how wonderful to get this all in order BEFORE you get married.
I have heard and read that moderate alcohol consumption is good for preventing heart disease, and i know a high level of HDL cholesterol prevents heart disease, but what does alcohol have to do with it?!?
it depends on what type of alcohol…not all are created equal and healthy. it reduces the plaque in your arteries

Your community should thank you for your kindness and concern. Just below this message, I’ve posted tried and tested links where you can ask help. You’re right when you said that they need to enter rehab as soon as possible. Moreover, parents should be educate, too, so that they may provide proper assistance to their children.

Besides The Increase in your alcohol tolerance and the associated need for an increase in consumption, is there any danger from daily drinking? (1-2 standard units)
~Bottoms Up.
Nasty things can happen if you abuse alcohol, but negative consequences do exist for moderate drinking as well. This can sometimes include osteoporosis, obesity, and liver cirrhosis. Cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, and breasts is common as well as an elevated level of triglycerides in your blood, which in turn can lead to pancreatitis, which can cause diabetes and damage to your heart, lungs, and kidneys. I provided a good website that outlines some of the many repercussions as well as benefits to drinking alcohol.
Once someone has an interlock ignition device installed in their car, how many hours before they start to drink can they have a drink or two? How long does alcohol stay in your system after drinking to register a blood alcohol content or breath alcohol content? I have heard it can take just a few hours to days. Any one know for sure?
I would not even mess with that my ex bf had one in his car had a couple beers (he was a BIG guy muscles!) and this was after a couple hours and it went off and he went back to jail DO NOT MESS WITH THOSE!
